NordPass also includes a fully customizable Folders feature. Adding new entries is easy - simply go to the relevant category, click on Add, fill out the appropriate details, and hit Save. You can store passwords, secure notes (like Wi-Fi passwords, alarm codes, or other text-based information), credit cards, and personal information (address, phone number, email, etc). All apps have the same features, functionality, and design, so you can easily access, add, and edit your information from all of your devices. NordPass’s password vault can be accessed via its desktop apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux, via mobile apps on Android and iOS, and via web extensions in compatible web browsers - meaning you can always access your account, no matter what device you are using. It’s not the most advanced or customizable password manager on the market, but it comes with a clean and intuitive interface and a number of additional features that make it one of the best options available. Overall, NordPass has all of the core features you need to manage your passwords and other sensitive information in a secure way. Admittedly, a lot of its features are more basic than those offered by competitors such as 1Password and Dashlane, but it’s still an excellent choice for users just wanting a secure password manager that does the basics well. NordPass is one of our top password managers in 2023 thanks to the addition of these more advanced features. NordPass also comes with some additional security features, including: This is great when you consider that a lot of password managers don’t provide account recovery at all. This means that not even NordPass’s staff can see or access your passwords and other sensitive information, and in the unlikely event of NordPass being hacked, your data will still be safe.ĭespite NordPass’s zero-knowledge protocol, there is a way to recover your account should you lose your master password. NordPass also uses zero-knowledge architecture, meaning all of your data is encrypted locally rather than on NordPass’s servers. While it’s hard to say if XChaCha20 actually makes NordPass more secure than other password managers, it’s certainly never a bad thing to know your sensitive information is protected by the very latest in secure technology. NordPass uses the XChaCha20 encryption algorithm - this is a modern algorithm considered to be more “future-proof” than the AES encryption that most password managers use (although 256-bit AES encryption is also impossible to crack). NordPass’s Free plan is more generous than many other password managers, and all of its paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so there’s no risk in trying it out. That said, its features are more basic than other top password managers, its form filling could be better, and its iOS app still needs some work. In addition to providing unlimited storage and the latest in encryption technology, NordPass offers secure password sharing, data breach monitoring, password health checks, multi-factor authentication, biometric logins, and emergency access. NordPass is a simple and secure password manager with a decent range of basic but useful features. TRY NORDPASS NOW (30 DAYS RISK-FREE) NordPass Full Review Windows, Android, Mac, iOS, Linux, ChromeOS (but only logged into 1 device at a time) NordPass offers a free 30-day Premium trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee on all paid plans. NordPass Premium and Family come with the full range of advanced features and allow use on up to 6 devices at once. There are several plans to choose from, including a free plan that offers all the core features, plus unlimited vault storage and unlimited device synchronization - but you can only be logged into 1 device at a time. That said, NordPass is very intuitive and beginner-friendly, and its customer support is excellent. The iOS app is also a bit minimal compared to the Android app. NordPass is also limited in terms of what you can save in the password vaults - there’s no customization, and you can’t save details like your driver’s license or social insurance number. However, NordPass isn’t quite as feature-rich as other top password managers - it lacks 1Password’s multiple vaults, Travel Mode, and secure file storage, and Dashlane’s unlimited-data VPN, for example. I tested it on my Windows 11 PC, MacBook Air, iOS and Android devices and found that saving, generating, auto-filling, and sharing passwords is super straightforward. Most of NordPass’s features work really well. NordPass also offers a decent range of extras, like password sharing, a password health checkup tool, data breach monitoring, and emergency access. It offers a secure, simple, and easy-to-use interface with a good range of security features, including XChaCha20 encryption, a zero-knowledge policy, and multi-factor authentication (MFA). NordPass is one of the best password managers in 2023.

Human neuropsychological ( 5– 8) and neuroimaging ( 9– 20) studies have consistently shown anterior-temporal-to-inferior frontal “what” and parietal-to-lateral-prefrontal “where” auditory pathways, but whether such dual pathways exist also in the human nonprimary auditory cortex has remained a more controversial issue. Primate models ( 1, 2) suggest that this task is accomplished via parallel anterolateral “what” and caudolateral “where” nonprimary auditory cortex streams, resembling the functional subdivisions of the visual system ( 3, 4). One’s ability to perceive auditory objects in everyday acoustic environments depends on localization and identification of relevant sounds. This finding suggests that selective-attention effects are feature-specific in the human nonprimary auditory cortex and that they arise from enhanced tuning of receptive fields of task-relevant neuronal populations. Notably, selectively attending to phonetic content modulated response adaptation in the “what” pathway, whereas attending to sound location produced analogous effects in the “where” pathway. Our data further show that the “where” pathway is activated ≈30 ms earlier than the “what” pathway, possibly enabling the brain to use top-down spatial information in auditory object perception. spatial sound changes, demonstrating that the human nonprimary auditory cortex indeed processes speech-sound identity and location in parallel anterior “what” (in anterolateral Heschl’s gyrus, anterior superior temporal gyrus, and posterior planum polare) and posterior “where” (in planum temporale and posterior superior temporal gyrus) pathways as early as ≈70–150 ms from stimulus onset. We found a double dissociation in response adaptation to sound pairs with phonetic vs. Using combined hemodynamic (functional MRI) and electromagnetic (magnetoencephalography) measurements, we investigated whether such dual pathways exist already in the human nonprimary auditory cortex, as suggested by animal models, and whether selective attention facilitates sound localization and identification by modulating these pathways in a feature-specific fashion. * Note: PDF files require a viewer such as the free Adobe Reader.Human neuroimaging studies suggest that localization and identification of relevant auditory objects are accomplished via parallel parietal-to-lateral-prefrontal “where” and anterior-temporal-to-inferior-frontal “what” pathways, respectively. The auditory nerve carries this electrical signal to the brain, which turns it into a sound that we recognize and understand. When that happens, chemicals rush into the cells, creating an electrical signal. Bending causes pore-like channels, which are at the tips of the stereocilia, to open up. As the hair cells move up and down, microscopic hair-like projections (known as stereocilia) that perch on top of the hair cells bump against an overlying structure and bend. Those closer to the center detect lower-pitched sounds, such as a large dog barking. Hair cells near the wide end of the snail-shaped cochlea detect higher-pitched sounds, such as an infant crying. Hair cells-sensory cells sitting on top of the basilar membrane-ride the wave. Once the vibrations cause the fluid inside the cochlea to ripple, a traveling wave forms along the basilar membrane. This partition is called the basilar membrane because it serves as the base, or ground floor, on which key hearing structures sit. An elastic partition runs from the beginning to the end of the cochlea, splitting it into an upper and lower part. The bones in the middle ear amplify, or increase, the sound vibrations and send them to the cochlea, a snail-shaped structure filled with fluid, in the inner ear. These bones are called the malleus, incus, and stapes.

Drawing on such classic values as honesty, determination, passion, and responsibility, Peck overcomes nearly insurmountable obstacles to find the vase and launch his career as a successful manager. When peck beats his quota, he earns the ultimate opportunity and the ultimate test: the quest for the blue vase. In this book, Bill Peck, a war veteran, persuades Cappy Ricks, the crusty founder of the Ricks Logging & Lumbering Company, to let him prove himself with a sales assignment that everyone knows can only lead to failure. Ever since its first printing in 1921, The Go-Getter has inspired employees and entrepreneurs to take initiative, increase their productivity, and excel against the odds. "So they really don't stand out visually, but if you listen for them, you'll know they're right up there. "The one reason you want to know that song is because it's not a real colorful bird and they love to be up in that middle and upper part of a tree canopy," he said. The song is difficult to pick out just by the quality of the voice, Volkert said, birdwatchers should instead listen to the pattern, which mnemonically sounds like, "Here I am, where are you?" he said. The red-eyed Vireo is a small songbird that is somewhat similar to a warbler and has a whistle song close to that of a robin. where it can be found from late April to August. The species breeds in the park’s Chisos Mountains the only area in the U.S. You’ve likely heard some of Wisconsin’s common birds like robins, cardinals and goldfinches - but for some birds that require closer listening, Volkert shared four bird songs to keep an ear out for. The Colima Warbler, another Texas songbird specialty that is treasured by birders, can be found only in a small corner of Big Bend National Park at the eastern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. "For birdwatchers it was frustrating because you kept expecting that things would be there as normal, but they were probably about a week to 10 days late." "This year we were lucky that with the cold weather and the lack of insect food out there for the songbirds, they didn't arrive," he said. While it’s been an unusual year, it’s a much better situation than last year when the birds arrived on time, only to be clobbered by a late April snowstorm that diminished their food supply, said Bill Volkert, a former naturalist and wildlife educator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. beautiful forest passerine bird, adorable woodland songbird. Wisconsin’s bird migration got off to a slow start this year, but now that summer is in full swing, the songbirds that were delayed by a cold and wet spring have caught up to schedule. Quantitative objectivity is in a way a form of standardization, the use of rules to confine and tame the personal and subjective. There I emphasize that effective quantification is never a matter simply of discovery, but always also of administration, hence of social and technological power. This interest in the relations of the natural and the social is also central to my Trust in Numbers: The Pursuit of Objectivity in Science and Public Life (1995). My first book, The Rise of Statistical Thinking (1986), was about the development of statistical ambitions and methods in fields ranging from the social science of statistics to biological evolution and thermodynamics. When I was a graduate student, it was just beginning. Historical and social research on data and statistics has become by now a flourishing international enterprise. Asylum numbers, in my view, were a notable early form of big data. Although an obsession with hereditary factors or genes appeared quite early, the work depended mainly on records of bodily measures and diagnosed health conditions, that is, on phenotypic more than genotypic data. After 1900, when Mendelism and biometry appeared on the scene, bringing bold ambitions for a new hereditary science, they quickly discovered that asylums and special schools were invaluable, not only for their data, but even for their research methods. Doctors and statisticians developed increasingly ambitious tabular technologies to draw out the implications of their data. Although patients formed the core population for hereditary study, some asylum doctors were working to extend their data empire to near and distant family members as early as 1840. Its basis was patient data, gathered up and printed in annual asylum reports. As a medical-social field it was framed by bureaucratic demands, yet it extended beyond them right from the start. My most recent book, Genetics in the Madhouse: The Unknown History of Human Heredity (2018), recovers a long-forgotten form of hereditary investigation that took shape in the 1820s. Most of my work has involved in some way the uses of statistics, calculation, numbers, measures, and data. I teach various topics involving history of science, especially the human sciences.Īlready by 1980, I was interested in diverse sites of knowledge-making-not just universities and academics, but mining boards, statistical agencies (notably census offices), engineering corps, and mental hospitals. Return to the remote island nation of Tropico in the next installment of the critically acclaimed and hugely popular ‘dictator sim’ series. “It doesn’t leak,” says Gates, with another smile. Meanwhile, his show in Basel – staged across two of the museum’s venues – contains one of his dramatic black tar paintings, inspired by his father’s hard-graft work as a roofer (his mother was a schoolteacher): every aspect of the artwork, from the glossy bitumen applied with a large mop, to the copper nails used to secure the picture to its support, conforms to traditional roofing techniques. In the past, for instance, he has made a series of artworks out of decommissioned fire hoses called In the Event of a Race Riot. Sometimes, however, she appears with a dark or black face and hands – and this Black Madonna fascinates Gates, whose work interrogates the legacy of the civil-rights movement and the experience of black people in the US today. Conventionally, of course, Mary appears in painting and sculpture as a young mother with white skin. The inclusion of Van Heemskerck’s painting alludes to the so-called ‘Black Madonna’ in Western art history. “So, here are three ‘Black Madonnas’,” Gates tells me, with a smile. Next to this, we see a large photograph of a beautiful young black woman, her face framed by pretty, white lace, reproducing a vintage shot from a 20th-Century lifestyle magazine pitched at African-Americans. It appears alongside a disturbing video, by Gates, looping clips from a 1935 film, The Littlest Rebel – in which Shirley Temple, playing the daughter of a plantation-owning family during the American Civil War, appears in blackface. It makes for a complex but intoxicating mix.Ĭonsider, for instance, how Gates presents ‘The Ghetto Madonna’, which he calls the “anchor” of the show. According to Gates, a thoughtful, charismatic presence who began his artistic career as a potter, the exhibition “weaves back and forth from religious adoration to political manifesto to self-empowerment to historical reflection”. We are standing before Van Heemskerck’s panel because Gates – who hails from Chicago and has won international acclaim for his renovations of dilapidated buildings in the city’s South Side neighbourhood – has hung it at the start of Black Madonna, his new solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum, which will run until October. But it is typical of the way his deft mind works, making startling, unforeseen connections between disparate things. Gates’s ‘reading’ may be unorthodox, even provocative – in particular, his assertion that Van Heemskerck’s Virgin “is an octoroon, ie one-eighth black” is bound to make art historians start harrumphing. We try to strike a balance between having it all feel integrated and natural, and being able to read quickly and efficiently. “But then again we don’t want to push it to a point where it starts to feel gamey, where you have Mario with a question mark block that just screams at you. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the sequel to 2015's Ori and the Blind Forest and while it's very similar to the first, there are a lot of new things to learn about the game's mechanics, systems. “We try to strike a balance between making a composition with leading lines that will nudge you to focus on something and get the right contrast,” van Leeuwen tells me. It is the follow-up to Ori and the Blind Forest, developed by Moon Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. On top of that, you’ve got to balance each asset and environment’s visual fidelity with proper readability - there’s no point having a gorgeous map if the route for progressions is impenetrable due to ambiguous visual signposting. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a platform adventure game. Related: Gareth Coker's Stunning Use Of Musical Color In Ori And The Will Of The Wisps “That’s the innocent phase, where you’re like, ‘There has to be a way that we can just have a button push.’ Not so simple.” Van Leeuwen jokes that every single new artist that joined the project eventually came into contact with this task and tried to automate it to save time. You get this really satisfying reactive impact on enemies. Hit one with the Spirit Smash from behind, and it’ll get up to 150 of the hit animation to really communicate the power of the attack. It was kind of a punishing task for artists because painting these things all day wasn’t good for your artistic soul.” If you’re hitting an enemy from the front with the Spirit Edge, the game might add 30 of a hit reaction to whatever the enemy is already doing. If you do the math it comes pretty close to that. We counted all of the assets and there seemed to be 7,000 or so, and all of them have six direction maps.
